I think Therefore I Am: The Power of the Mind

A lot of people are confused about what the sentence “I think therefore I am” by Descartes really mean. Most people can explain what it actually means but more often than not, the explanation is lengthy and touches on other topics along the way. It is rare to find someone who can explain what it means in a straightforward manner.

This quote was from Rene Descartes and was published in a book about meditation. It mostly means that the mind plays the greatest role in everything that a person does and everything that he or she believes in. The mind is powerful and it can take over a human being’s inner self. This is a collection of books wherein Descartes went through different mind challenges. In the first book, he realized that what he used to believe in is unreal. This then causes him to doubt everything else that he believes in. This applies to most people. People are often confused on what they believe in so they mostly go with their instincts and their emotions. When asked why they think that what they believe in is the truth, they cannot offer any concrete explanation and evidence at all. It will all just boil down on people’s gut feel or information that came from a person that they trust.

On the second book, Descartes tries to convince himself that nothing in this world is real. This is something that most people feel whenever they are hurt or they had a traumatic experience. They are usually in denial. They choose to believe that nothing is real so that they can easily move on. Ignorance indeed is bliss and for specific periods of time, people tend to prefer having nothing instead of having to deal with pain.

Power of Mind

At the end, the power of mind still prevails. Descartes thought that he is still real, as well as everything else in this place. This also happens to people nowadays. In the end, they will realize that life goes on and they have to move on with it. There will be a lot of pains and suffering but moving on is the only way to get over such unpleasant experiences.

It is all about the power of mind. People will always turn to what their inner self is telling them and it is to get back on their feet and continue on their journey. They will soon realize that it is time to move on to a new beginning. The realization and the healing process will all depend upon the person’s personality and what or who controls their mind. Focus In Meditation

Focus is having a central point of attention or activity. What you put your focus and energy will materialise, you can make a new world through focus. It is concentrating 100% on the object with your senses. Focus does not allow you to deviate from the object. Focus needs immense alertness.

Focusing is a deep, interactive technique for personal growth that draws upon the wisdom of your real self. Focusing is a way to pay attention to, and understand the process of the meditation. It is a tool which helps in order to follow the thread of truth. Focusing is a way to discover, on the deep level of inner experiencing, what is right. The quieting concentration like the clearing a space of focusing, sweeps away the usual mind/body activities that stand in the way of this still quiet voice, which is felt in focusing. Focusing takes you to an experiential “knowing” of your evolving self, of the arising, transforming, and passing away of the many steps of the complex activities in day to day life.

Though there are many ups and downs in life, focus comes from understanding that you should remain level headed during those ups and downs. Focus never looks back. Focused person always remains creative. At every second to contribute virtue to the journey, not just to make the best of things, but to make them beautiful. Focus is tireless. Focus is when you can stand still in a particular mental position and give whatever you are doing the undiluted strength of that stillness.

Focusing on an object takes you above now, above barriers, above relationships, above the senses and above even your own body. Focus takes you to the sheer truth. Focusing attention is dependent on top-down processing while automatic attention is more focused on bottom-up processing. Bottom-up processing is mainly triggered by the presence of environmental stimuli, while top-down processing is dependent on information in memory, including expectation of what might occur while engaging in the task.

This balance is not indifference, but active mindfulness. Because it is rooted in insight of spirit it’s not unbalanced by the passions of attraction and aversion and is free of the extremes of joy or sorrow.

Meditation is balancing one’s body and mind properly. This balancing automatically brings balancing of your emotions which helps in controlling your anxiety, anger, fear, phobias etc. It improves your patience.

Patience is a wonderful measure against indiscretion, but it’s also a means of encouragement. In Buddhist culture the term “equanimity” occurs frequently. Meditation is a steady and continuous yet gentle process. When you begin practicing it and immediately expect the results, you may get disappointed and may stop the practice. But patience takes you slowly and gradually to the long way whatever you do.

Try to keep noble silence for at least ten minutes every day.
Try to reduce your time of watching TV.

Gratitude is a sense of thankfulness or appreciation for a gift, favor or gesture.‘ Gratitude’ come from the Latin word gratus, which mean ‘pleasing’ or ‘thankful.

Gratitude, gratefulness and thanks-giving are one of the laws of life. As you take a look around, you discover that everyone is absorbed in his or her own world. As you analyze yourself, you may find that since childhood, you’ve been brought up in such a way that important “I” takes lead over most important “We”. You aspire, struggle, and put in tons of effort to reach your aspirations. Your journey from aspiration to achievement is possible only because of all that you have received and all that you are receiving and all that you will receive. This flow is continuous and uninterrupted. So you tend to consider this flow from the entire Universe as your birthright and are oblivious to your duty to be grateful.

Learn to take care of people and be grateful for what they have given you. Be grateful to every single person you know. Don’t leave yourself out. Sit in a calm and quiet place. Starting from your hair to toes, express gratitude to each and every part of your body.
